Here I discuss easily the most common form of Neck/shoulder pain that I see in the clinic on a weekly basis. The muscle I am referring to is called the levator scapulae muscle that attaches between your shoulder blade and your neck.
Strain or tightness in this muscle can be particularly unpleasant and can cause a radiating pain at either the origin or insertion of the muscle, or even both simultaneously in severe cases. The important thing to establish when assessing this muscle is to find out, is it short and tight? Or is it lengthened and weakened?
This will determine which type of treatment will be most effective for getting you back to a pain free life. For example, if your levator scapulae was lengthened and weakened, it may not be a good idea to endlessly stretch the muscle throughout the day, as this could cause the problem to deteriorate!
